One of my classmates (a girl), who has some medical experience, spent half of her summer internship working as a nurse in Haiti. She was in a hospital that handled a lot of patients that Doctors Without Borders (DWB) passed on to them. One thing you need to know about DWB - they get funded based on success rate of their patients, in other words, they pass on dying patients. So my classmate dealt for 8 weeks with dying people in Haiti, in understaffed hospital, living in a tent and showering once a week. She says it was one of the most fulfilling experiences in her life. We talked a bit about our choices to go into finance, and how, if we were to go back in time, we probably would've chosen a different professional path. The other half of her summer she spent in a top investment bank, in their internal hedge fund group, a place half of my classmates would kill to be in.
Makes me wonder what the hell am i doing with my life.
